Barter's Island Waterfront The owners of a center chimney, exposed post and beam style home perched above the trees that line Back River wanted more than a home, rather a reflection of their environmentally kind lifestyle. They desired a dwelling which aligned aesthetically and functionally with their love of and respect for nature. Knickerbocker Design worked closely with the client to create an architectural design which reused materials where possible, incorporated numerous windows to bring nature into the home, required minimal maintenance, and was energy efficient. A new roof and addition were designed to blend into the existing structure in order to use a large portion of the original structure. Blown-in cellulose insulation, radiant floor heating, and energy efficient windows conserve heating fuel. Exterior cedar shingles and trim, renewable growth Ipe decking, and clad window exteriors, make maintenance minimal. The owners are passionate kayakers and now their return from the water to their environmentally friendly home is seamless.
