Culture

Working at Knickerbocker Group is about bringing vision, dedication, passion, balance, and well-being to all that we do, whether we’re designing a home or building one. We host regular get-togethers at our outdoor grotto and on our rooftop deck, provide complimentary office snacks and locally roasted coffee, and throw an annual family lobster bake. Our two offices provide location flexibility: our recently renovated downtown Portland office is within walking distance of the vibrant Old Port and our Boothbay office is just a 10-minute drive from the charming coastal town of Boothbay Harbor and across the road from a nature preserve. Both offices are designed to support active lifestyles, with showers for those who bike or run to work.

People

Our biggest strength is our employee-owners who work across a range of disciplines and share an active, engaged, and equal voice. We have a strong sense of mentorship and a passion for continuous improvement. Our employee-owners include those who have been here for decades and those who are just beginning their careers, and our low employee turnover rate speaks to our dedication to the design-build process and the inspiring work that results. We’re doers, makers, musicians, artists, adventure racers, boat captains, and creatives.

Benefits

Job perks include generous paid time off, 401k contributions (no match required), workplace flexibility, excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance with employee premiums paid by the company, a Health Savings Account option, life, short-term, and long-term disability insurance at no expense, a generous parental leave policy, tuition and licensing reimbursement, and more.

Community

We’re built on community (literally–our leadership team first met at a non-profit committee meeting!), and for the last forty years, we’ve made it our mission to give back. Our annual corporate giving includes supporting and sponsoring more than 50 non-profits and local organizations. Our employee-owners have hosted a coat drive for Preble Street, cheered skiers on as they race down Sugarloaf for WinterKids Downhill, and helped build a home for Habitat for Humanity, and they’re given time off to participate on industry boards such as AIA Maine and MIDA.

Recognition

We like to do good work and work with good people. Knickerbocker Group has repeatedly been recognized as a Best Place to Work in Maine and as both Best Architect and Best Builder in Maine by Down East magazine. We’ve received design awards from industry organizations such as Maine AIA and New England IIDA and have been featured in the press nationally (Martha Stewart Living, Architectural Digest, Travel + Leisure) as well as closer to home (New England Home, Maine Home+Design, Maine Homes, and Decor Maine).  See Press

Employee-Ownership

We’ve grown a lot since our founding as a small carpentry company in 1978. Today, we’re a full-service design firm that’s woman-led and 100% employee-owned. With ownership comes empowerment and our team members think and act like owners: they listen, share, detail, create, and innovate—together—and carry a strong sense of pride and purpose. They’re also able to grow their personal retirement savings, at no additional cost to the employee, through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan.

Life in Maine

There’s a reason (lots actually) why they say it’s the way life should be. Whether it’s Saturday ski trips, early morning surf sessions, and after-work hikes or visits to farmers’ markets, art galleries, craft breweries and award-winning restaurants, there seems to be something for everyone in Maine. The state’s breathtaking beauty, as well as its rich history of craftsmanship and quality, influences all that we do.
