A space for everyone

On the Sasanoa River, The Party Barn was created as a flexible, welcoming place for friends and family to gather across generations. The homeowners envisioned a barn where casual afternoons, festive celebrations, and even sports activities could coexist—all without compromising comfort or style. Basketball and pickleball courts anchor the space, encouraging playful interaction while maintaining a sense of warmth and connection.

Knickerbocker Group collaborated closely with Maine Barn Company to ensure the barn’s architecture, interiors, and finishes worked together seamlessly. Every decision—from the timber frame to furnishings and finishes—was guided by the principle of creating a space built to last, both physically and generationally.

The centerpiece

The barn’s timber frame, crafted by Maine Barn Company, serves as both structure and feature. Curved braces, a king post truss, hand-cut through tenons, and a citrus-based natural wood finish define the character of the space. The frame allows for soaring ceilings and open sightlines while naturally organizing the interior into zones for dining and lounging. A large fireplace anchors the design, becoming a central gathering point for quiet moments and lively celebrations alike.

Flexible interiors for multigenerational living

Inside, the barn balances activity and comfort. An 11-foot live edge table accommodates meals or games, while armchairs by the fireplace and window seats provide cozy spots for reading. The interiors balance warmth and natural finishes, allowing the timber frame and open plan to remain the focus.

Even with the basketball and pickleball courts, the space remains scaled, welcoming for one or two people as easily as it is for a gathering of twenty.

Thoughtful site integration along the riverfront

The barn was sited to embrace the riverfront setting without interrupting the natural serenity of the shoreline. Board-and-batten siding, brick-red windows, and natural wood finishes allow the structure to blend with its surroundings while maintaining a strong presence. Outdoor patios and circulation areas extend the barn’s functionality and reinforce its connection to the landscape.

Designed for friends and family

From concept to completion, The Party Barn embodies a multigenerational vision. Timber framing, durable finishes, and thoughtful layout choices ensure the space will serve the family for decades, offering both playful and quiet moments. The barn is a place where memories accumulate naturally, where friends and family can gather, play, and connect—one that may very well welcome great-grandchildren in the years to come.
